סביר להניח שמקור המילה “מסע” אבוד להיסטוריה. מקור המונח “מסע” הוא מהמילה הצרפתית הישנה travail. [3] על פי מילון מרים וובסטר, השימוש הראשון הידוע במילה נסיעות היה במאה ה -14. הוא גם קובע כי המילה באה מאנגלית תיוונית travailen, travelen (שפירושה להתייסר, לעבוד, לשאוף, לנסוע) ומוקדם יותר מטראוויילר הצרפתי הישן (שמשמעותו עבודה מאומצת, עמל).

באנגלית אנו עדיין משתמשים מדי פעם במילים travail ו- travails, שמשמעותן מאבק. על פי סיימון וינצ’סטר בספרו “מיטב הנוסעים הטובים ביותר” (2004), המילים טיול ותאוות הן חולקות שורש קדום עוד יותר: מכשיר עינויים רומאי שנקרא טריפאליום (בלטינית פירושו “שלוש הימור”, כמו ב לִדקוֹר). קישור זה משקף את הקושי הקיצוני בנסיעות בעת העתיקה.
